Physical Growth and Nutritional Status of the Children of El Progreso

As discussed in Chapter 2, the patterns of physical growth of the children of a community provide a sensitive set of indicators of the nutritional and health status of the population as a whole. This chapter presents the analysis of the physical growth and nutritional status of children of El Progreso. For our purposes, five measures of growth were obtained at each visit: height (length at 1-year of age), weight, head circumference, arm circumference, and triceps skinfold. Two variables were derived from these measurements. The first is the body mass index (BMI), which is an expression of body mass independent of stature. In more extreme cases, it indicates either wasting or obesity. The body mass index is calculated as:
